American painter, printmaker, illustrator and writer Rockwell Kent became well known for his stark and realistic landscape paintings depicting the primordial ruggedness of such settings as Monhegan Island and the Alaskan wilderness. Kent also published a number of illustrated memoirs about his adventures abroad, including Wilderness: A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska (1920) and N by E (1930).
