Borenstein was the first Jewish trustee of Boston College, was a trustee of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, served on the board of directors at the American Jewish Congress and American Friends of Hebrew University, served as associate chairman of the scholarship committee of Harvard Law School and was the founder of the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.
