Popular in early 20th century America, cigarette silks were produced by many tobacco companies as free accompaniments to cigarette packets. The silks featured a variety of subject matter including animals, motor vehicles, railways, and botanical designs. With the outbreak of World War I, silks featuring military uniforms, medals, flags and war heroes became popular, particularly with male smokers. Silks were also produced with the female consumer in mind with some companies including instructions for making household items such as quilts with their silks.
