LAXNESS, Halldor.

Item Number: 763

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946.

First American edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Halldor Laxness in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper. Bookplate of Yale historian and critic Jeffrey L. Sammons on the front pastedown. Very good in the dust jacket that shows some very light rubbing to the crown of the spine.

Independent People is the author's most acclaimed work and was originally published in Iceland as SJÁLFSTÆTT FÓLK in 1934. "There are good books and there are great books and there may be a book that is something still more: it is the book of your life. . . . My favorite book by a novelist is Independent People" (Brad Leithauser).
