First edition of this in memoriam of John Bascombe Lock from the Caian magazine of Cambridge. Octavo, original wrappers, frontispiece of John Bascombe Lock. Presentation copy, inscribed by H.A. Roberts to John Neville Keynes on the front panel, “Dr. J.N. Keynes with the author’s compliments.” The recipient, John Neville Keynes (1852–1949), was an English economist and philosopher best known for his influential work in economic methodology, particularly The Scope and Method of Political Economy (1891), which helped clarify the distinction between positive and normative economics. A longtime administrator and lecturer at the University of Cambridge, he played a formative intellectual role in shaping the academic environment in which his son, economist John Maynard Keynes, developed, while also contributing independently to debates on logic, probability, and the philosophical foundations of economic science. In very good condition. Rare.

John Bascombe Lock (1849–1921) was an English clergyman, academic administrator, and mathematician whose career was closely associated with Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Educated at Caius after earlier schooling in Dorchester and Bristol, he combined clerical duties with a long academic career, serving as a Fellow from 1874 and as Bursar from 1889 until his death, during which time he played a significant role in the development of university buildings and governance. In addition to authoring several mathematical textbooks and teaching at Eton College for over a decade, Lock held prominent civic positions, including Chairman of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, reflecting his influence beyond the university.
