The first solo project by any member of The Beatles, John Lennon’s first book, In His Own Write, is a collection of short stories, poems, and line drawings that display his gift for free association, nonsense, and wordplay. Published in 1964 by Jonathan Cape in Britain and Simon and Schuster in the United States, with an introduction by Paul McCartney, it was an immediate success and was translated into several languages within the year. On 23 April 1964, Lennon left the filming of A Hard Day’s Night to attend a literary luncheon given by Foyles at the Dorchester Hotel in London, where, after a famously brief speech, he signed numerous copies of the newly published book for the assembled guests.
