First edition. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, all edges gilt, inner dentelles, frontispiece of Queen Mary. Inscribed by Queen Victoria to her son-in-law, “To dear Lorne, from his very affect. Mama, V. R., Christmas 1874.” An ownership inscription in pencil on the opposite page notes, “Bought at Sotheby’s sale Feb. 23rd 1948 of the Duke of Kent’s books, Lot 42.” The recipient, John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, Marquess of Lorne, was the husband of Victoria’s daughter Princess Louise; he served as the governor general of Canada from 1878 to 1883. In near fine condition.

Despite opposition from members of the royal family, Princess Louise fell in love with and married John, Marquess of Lorne in 1871. The ceremony, held at Saint George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle drew such a large crowd that police had to form protective barriers to keep control.
