Oakland: Thompson & West, 1880.

First edition of this early work on Los Angeles county. Quarto, original leather backed cloth, gilt titles. Illustrated with 86 lithographed plates (two of them double-page); hand-colored lithographed map. In very good condition. From the library of the Ebell of Los Angeles, inscription. Rare in the original binding.

Spectacular series of views of the rather sleepy settlements which were to become the megalopolis of Southern California, including the communities of the future Orange County, just prior to the boom of the 1880s. The historical text includes biographical data, a business directory, etc. One of the scarcer of the Thompson & West county histories, and of a very desirable area. Cowan p. 397; Rocq 2657.
