Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco by Asprey with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, illustrated with engravings after photographs including frontispiece, charts, graphs and maps. The founder of the Geological Society of America, Massachusetts native Charles Henry Hitchcock taught at Dartmouth College from 1868 to 1908 where he held the Hall Professorship of Geology and Mineralogy. During his tenure, he visited his distant cousin Harvey Rexford Hitchcock, a Protestant missionary in Hawaii, which resulted in the detailed studies published in the present volume.
