Item Number: 99835

Rare original photograph of American statesmen Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson. Inscribed by Harry Truman, “Kind regards to Ken Browne, Harry Truman” and by Stevenson, “For Ken Browne with best wishes Adlai S. Stevenson.” Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 14.5 inches.

Early in 1952, while Stevenson was still governor of Illinois, President Harry S. Truman decided that he would not seek another term as president. Instead, Truman met with Stevenson in Washington and proposed that Stevenson seek the Democratic nomination for president; Truman promised him his support if he did so. Although Stevenson was initially hesitant, he eventually accepted the Democratic nomination and was ultimately defeated by his Republican opponent Dwight D. Eisenhower.
