CHAMBERS, Charles E. S.

Item Number: 95901

Edinburgh & London: W. & R. Chambers, 1887.

First edition of this early golfing handbook, informed by three generations of the Scottish Chambers family. Small octavo, original cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, pictorial endpapers, chromolithographic frontispiece portrait of Tom Morris from a drawing by Thomas Hodge at St. Andrews with tissue guard, illustrated by Ranald M. Alexander and others. In very good condition.

The son of highly influential 18th century Scottish publisher Robert Chambers, Robert Chambers Jr. co-founded the W. & R. Chambers publishing house in Edinburgh in 1853 and in 1862 published his excellent book on golfing: Few Rambling Remarks on Golf. On the death of his uncle William in 1883, the whole responsibility of the publishing house devolved upon him, but he was assisted during the last two or three years of his life by his eldest son, Charles Chambers. He took an active part in the production of the first edition of Chambers's Encyclopædia (1859–68), and helped in the preliminary work in connection with the new edition.
