New York: Harper and Row, Publishers, 1927.

Signed limited first edition of the “fullest, finest, and most powerful novel that has been written about pioneer life in America” (The Nation). Octavo, original cloth. One of 100 copies signed by O.E. Rolvaag. Translated by and with an introduction by Lincoln Colcord. In very good condition.

The novel follows a pioneer Norwegian immigrant family's struggles with the land and the elements of the Dakota Territory as they try to make a new life in America. In 1873, Per Hansa, his wife Beret, their children settle in the Dakota Territory. They are joined by three other Norwegian immigrant families—Tonseten and his wife Kjersti, Hans Olsa and his wife Sorine, and the Solum brothers. "That in Giants in the Earth this Norwegian American immigrant has made a distinct contribution to the literature of two countries there is no doubt...It has a bare simplicity which is cumulative in effectiveness" (New York Times). It was turned into an opera of the same name by Douglas Moore and Arnold Sundgaard; it won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1951.
