Signed limited large paper edition of Goethe’s Faust with 31 colored plates by Willy Pogany. Quarto, original full vellum decorated in gilt, silk-watered endleaves, top edge gilt, illustrated with 31 colored plates by Willy Pogany including frontispiece each with captioned tissue-guard, decorative title printed in black and red. One of 250 numbered copies signed by Willy Pogany with an extra colored plate of The Witches Revel, this is number 51. In fine condition. A very nice example.
Hungarian children's book illustrator Willy Pogany remains best known for his pen and ink drawings of myths and fables. Heavily fairy-tale orientated and often featuring motifs of mythical animals such as nymphs and pixies, his style is a fine example of Art Nouveau. Pogany illustrated more than 150 volumes including The Golden Fleece, Gulliver's Travels, The Adventures of Odysseus, and Goethe's Faust.
