First Edition of Deena Rosenberg's Fascinating Rhythm; Inscribed by Her to Broadway Composer Charles Strouse
First edition of this landmark study of the creative partnership between George and Ira Gershwin. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated with musical examples and black-and-white photographs. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Dear Charles, to a lifetime of great theatre song! Warmly, Deena. Ltd. Ed. MTI New Year's 1992." The recipient, Charles Strouse, was a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning composer whose fifty-year career produced some of the most enduring works in the history of American musical theater, among them Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, and Annie, as well as the theme song for the classic sitcom All in the Family ("Those Were the Days"). His partnership with Martin Charnin on Annie produced one of Broadway's most successful scores ever, with "Tomorrow" and other songs from the production becoming enduring American musical standards admired by generations. His reach knew no genre or generation, from a number-one Billboard hit in 1958 to Jay-Z's Grammy-winning sampling of "It's the Hard-Knock Life" four decades later, and his honors include three Tony Awards and induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Theater Hall of Fame. From the collection of Strouse and his wife, the choreographer Barbara Siman, with his ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. In near fine condition.
Fascinating Rhythm: The Collaboration of George and Ira Gershwin was the first book to examine in depth the songwriting partnership of the brothers George and Ira Gershwin, tracing how composer and lyricist worked together to create such enduring standards as "Fascinating Rhythm," "The Man I Love," "Embraceable You," and "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Drawing on manuscripts, sketches, and the Gershwins' own working methods, Deena Rosenberg combined musical and lyrical analysis to show how words and music were fused in the American popular song. Rosenberg, a scholar and educator of the American musical theater, founded the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, one of the first programs of its kind.
