Everest: The Unclimbed Ridge tells the story of the 1982 expedition led by Chris Bonington to attempt the last great unclimbed line on Mount Everest, the formidable Northeast Ridge. The book centers on the disappearance of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker, two of the finest mountaineers of their generation, who were last seen high on the ridge on May 17, 1982, and never returned; Boardman's body was found on the ridge a decade later. Sir Chris Bonington (born 1934) was the foremost British mountaineer of the postwar era and the leader of the expeditions that first climbed the south face of Annapurna and the southwest face of Everest, while Dr. Charles Clarke served as the expedition's physician. Written in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the book is both a gripping expedition narrative and an elegy for two lost friends.
