First edition of this classic work by Jacques Cousteau. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with 105 photographs in full color. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “Bettina! JY Cousteau.” The recipient was an international lawyer for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with and worked with Cousteau in Monaco on several occasions during the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, Cousteau was the director of the Musee Oceanographique in Monaco (1957-1988), where the recipient was working on drafting an agreement between the IAEA and Monaco to establish an oceanographic lab (Laboratory of Marine Radioactivity) for joint research at the Musee Oceanographique in Monaco. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Translated from the French by J.F. Bernard. Books signed by Cousteau are uncommon. 

In this work Cousteau recounts his experiences observing dolphins in the open seas, describes their characteristics, and looks at the history of their relationship with humans.
