Engraved document on parchment, completed by hand embossed blue seal affixed at lower left, boldly signed by President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of War Elihu Root. An appointment to “Second Lieutenant of the Cavalry by transfer from the Infantry, From March 27, 1903” for Norman H. Davis. Adjutant General’s recording stamp and signature at upper left. In near fine condition. The document measures 19.75 inches by 15.75 inches. An exceptional piece.

Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time, he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the early 20th century. Elihu Root was an American statesman who served as the Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley. He moved frequently between high-level appointed government positions in Washington, D.C. and private-sector legal practice in New York City. For that reason, he is sometimes considered to be the prototype of the 20th century political "wise man," advising presidents on a range of foreign and domestic issues. He was elected by the state legislature as a U.S. Senator from New York and served one term, 1909–1915. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.
