Barry Holstun Lopez is a writer whose work is known for its humanitarian and environmental concerns. He won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for Arctic Dreams (1986) and was a National Book Award finalist for his Of Wolves and Men (1978). The San Francisco Chronicle rightly described Lopez Lopez as "the nation's premier nature writer." His focus is twofold. His non-fiction examines the relationship between human culture and the physical domain, while in his fiction addresses issues of intimacy and ethics. Lopez' awards are as rich as his themes. He has won, for instance, the Award in Literature, American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lannan Literary Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the John Burroughs Medal.
