Item Number: 110794

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1946.

First edition, review copy of the Pulitzer prize-winning author’s second novel. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers. With the publisher’s advance copy slip to the half-title page dated April 15 1946. Fine in a very good dust jacket.

Eudora Welty won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1973 for her short story novel the Optimist's daughter, in addition to numerous other awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Order of the South. Set in 1923, Delta Wedding tells of the experiences of a memorable family, the Fairchilds, living in the rich Delta land of Mississippi in the early 1920s. Upon publication, The New York Times praised the work, describing it as venturing "deep into the motives and moods and compulsions that move [Welty's] characters... The interplay of family life, with a dozen different people saying and doing a dozen different things all at the same time, is wonderfully handled by Miss Welty so that no detail is lost."
