First edition of David Gentleman's London; Signed by Him

David Gentleman’s London.

GENTLEMAN, David.

Item Number: 5663

London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1985.

First edition of this work, which covers London from the inner city to the outer limits. Quarto, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated. Signed by David Gentleman on the half-title page. With 280 color and 40 black and white illustrations. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket.

Gentleman's series defy easy classification. While not specifically for the armchair traveler, the art student, or the coffee table, the volumes in his series are irresistible for all of the above. Having already produced books on Paris, India, and Italy, Gentleman now turns to London, where he has lived for nearly 40 years. In 320 charming pen and watercolor drawings that follow the Thames River from Thames Barrier to Richmond, he brings the reader into intimate contact with his city. He imaginatively pairs the nave of St. Paul's with the cathedral-like Leadenhall Market, and the modern blocks of the new City with the headstones of Bunhill Fields (where cartloads of bones were brought from St. Paul's charnel-house in 1549).
