Das Unbehagen in der Kultur (Civilization and its Discontents).
FREUD, Sigmund.
Item Number: 2882
Vienna: Internationaler Psychoanalytischer, 1930.
First German edition and true first of this seminal work. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated by Sigmund Freud in the year of publication to British psychologist Havelock Ellis. “To Havelock Ellis with affectionate regards Freud 1929/30.” Ellis also studied human sexuality and was the first to write the textbook on homosexuality and study transgender inclinations. He was influential to Freud most directly in relation to Ellis’ concepts of narcissism and autoerotocism, which were later developed further in his theory of psychoanalysis. Books signed by Freud are rare, and this book is even more unique for its association between these two pioneers in the field of human sexuality. In near fine condition with some light soiling to the cloth. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell case.
First published in 1930 as "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" and later translated as "Civilization and Its Discontents" has never been out-of-print. It is perhaps Freud's most widely-read work during his lifetime and it continues to be among his most influential studies. It stands as an authoritative analysis of culture and human civilization.
