Item Number: 137802
London: Jonathan Cape, 1950.
Early printing of the author’s masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “Arthur Koestler, being duly sworn, deposes and says, that Harold Granata is a shining exception among consuls, vice consuls and such, in as much as being human. London, September 19, 1951 Arthur Koestler.” Koestler had been granted permanent residence in the United States just a few weeks earlier; and the recipient, Harold M. Granata was United States Vice Consul to London at the time. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket. An exceptional inscription, rare and desirable signed and inscribed.
"Darkness At Noon transcends ordinary limitations. Written with such dramatic power, with such warmth of feeling, and with such persuasive simplicity that it is as absorbing as melodrama" (The New York Times Book Review). "One of the few books written in this epoch which will survive it" (New Statesman). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 Great Novels of the twentieth century.
