"It is a sickness of the emotions, and its symptoms can be seen on the labels of whiskey bottles": First Edition of John Prebble's Culloden

Culloden.

PREBBLE, John.

Item Number: 145208

London: Secker & Warburg, 1961.

First edition of this detailed recollection of the ordinary people involved in the last Jacobite Rising of 1745. Octavo, original red and black cloth, cartographic endpapers, illustrated with paintings and maps. Very good in a good price-clipped dust jacket. Ownership inscription from the year of publication. Ephemera tipped in.

'Culloden' is not the story of the 'Young Pretender' Bonnie Prince Charlie. It is, however, the story of a people, the 'Common Men' who suffered as soldiers, prisoners, and fugitives during the Rebellion. The detail found in 'Culloden' derives from regimental Order Books and manuals, newspapers and magazines, letters and memoirs of soldiers and officers, eye-witness accounts of persecution, and the personal stories of the victims themselves.
