Imperial edition of Dumas’ Celebrated Crimes. Octavo, eight volumes. Bound in three quarters morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, illustrated with photogravures after original drawings by De Los Rios, Prodhomme, and Wagrez, lettered tissue guards. One of only 500 numbered sets, this is number 433. In near fine condition. A stunning set.

An eight-volume collection of essays on famous criminals and crimes from European history, Dumas compiled Celebrated Crimes with the assistance of several friends. The volumes feature the stories of Beatrice Cenci, Martin Guerre, Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia, as well as more recent events and criminals, including the cases of the alleged murderers Karl Ludwig Sand and Antoine François Desrues, who were executed.
