An influential figure in the English wine trade, French-born wine merchant André Simon was a prolific writer, his most distinctive book being The History of the Wine Trade in England from Roman Times to the End of the 17th Century, published in three volumes between 1906 and 1909. Simon established the Wine and Food Society in 1933 with the objective of bringing connoisseurs together to appreciate food and wine as an essential part of personal contentment and good health. At this same time, he established the quarterly journal Wine and Food which helped to transform the study of gastronomy before, during and after the Second World War with articles about the history of wine and food, book reviews and critical assessments of hotels and restaurants.
