Renowned for her recognizably raspy improvisational vocal style, African American jazz singer Billie Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing and pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo throughout her career spanning nearly thirty years. A successful concert performer throughout the 1950s, Holiday performed with a number of fellow jazz legends including jazz pianist Count Basie and clarinetist Artie Shaw, her relationship with whom placed her among the first black women to work with a white orchestra and marked the first time a black female singer employed full-time toured the segregated U.S. South with a white bandleader.
