Warren Buffett began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway in 1962 and soon took control of the company. He initially maintained the firm's core business of textiles, by in 1967 began expanding into the insurance industry, acquiring an equity stake in GEICO in the late 1970s, which is now a primary source of capital for Berkshire Hathaway's other investments. Berkshire's class A shares sold for $339,188 as of January 8, 2020, making them the highest-priced shares on the New York Stock Exchange, in part because they have never had a stock split and have only paid a dividend once since Warren Buffett took over, retaining corporate earnings on its balance sheet in a manner that is impermissible for mutual funds. Berkshire Hathaway's annual meetings typically draw a crowd of more than 40,000 to Omaha, Nebraska, for a four-day fanfest crowned by a six-hour Q&A session with Buffett and his business partner Charlie Munger.
