Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For Joan Powell Regards Toni Morrison.” The recipient Joan Powell is a singer, dancer and actress, most well-known for  A Date with Judy (with Elizabeth Taylor), Royal Wedding (with Fred Astaire), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (with Howard Keel) and Hit the Deck. Set in post-Civil War Ohio, this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel concerns a runaway slave and her daughter, whose lives are disrupted by a former slave, a spirit and a woman named Beloved. "A masterwork. . . . I can’t imagine American literature without it" (John Leonard, Los Angeles Times). It was the basis for the movie Beloved, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandie Newton.
