First edition of the Beatitude Anthology, the landmark City Lights collection drawn from Beatitude, the legendary San Francisco Beat Generation magazine. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title page, "For Tom love Allen Ginsberg (forged)." This inscription has been crossed out by Ginsberg to which has been added "Tom Carey" with an arrow pointing at the original Ginsberg signature and a new signature, "Allen Ginsberg." In very good condition. Cover photograph by Fortunato Clementi. Rare signed.
Beatitude Anthology, published by City Lights in 1960, gathers work from the first sixteen issues of Beatitude, the mimeographed “weekly miscellany of poetry and other jazz” launched in a North Beach coffee house in San Francisco in 1959. Edited on a shoestring by figures including Allen Ginsberg, Bob Kaufman, and John Kelly, the magazine became one of the defining organs of the Beat Generation. This anthology collects poetry and prose by many of the movement’s leading voices, among them Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Philip Whalen, Bob Kaufman, Philip Lamantia, and Richard Brautigan. It was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Books, the San Francisco press and bookstore at the center of the Beat movement.
