Argonautica, or The Quest of Jason for the Golden Fleece, by Apollonius of Rhodes, is a Hellenistic epic that reimagines the heroic voyage of Jason and the Argonauts through the lens of Alexandrian literary refinement. Composed in the 3rd century BCE, the poem departs from Homeric models by emphasizing psychological realism, intricate character development, and emotional complexity—especially in its portrayal of Medea, whose internal conflict and transformation mark one of the earliest sustained explorations of romantic passion in Western literature. While retaining the structure of an epic quest, Argonautica foregrounds themes of leadership, identity, and divine intervention, blending mythological tradition with the scholarly and aesthetic concerns of the Ptolemaic era.
