First edition of this thrilling first-hand account of the Apollo 13 moon mission and the basis of the acclaimed 1995 film Apollo 13. Octavo, original boards, pictorial endpapers depicting the Aquarius lunar module and ‘The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13’, frontispiece of the Official Apollo 13 emblem, illustrated with photographs. Signed by Jim Lovell on the title page, “James Lovell.” Fine in a fine dust jacket.

The seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the moon, Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days into flight and the crew made a safe return to earth six days later despite the lack of potable water, limited power, loss to cabin heat, and makeshift repairs to the carbon dioxide removal system they were successful in devising. "A thrilling story of a thrilling episode in the history of space exploration...told in the vernacular of the men in the sky and on the ground who masterminded this triumph of heroism, intellectual brilliance and raw courage" (James A. Michener). Adapted into the 1995 film Apollo 13 directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Ed Harris.
