Tony Kushner's most famous work, a self-described "gay fantasia" describes an angel crashing to earth to summon a gay man dying from AIDS from his sick bed as a kind of prophet. The story takes place in the mid 1980's, when young gay men were expected to tend to the ill among them, while simultaneously facing their own mortality. "I struggle with the question of whether there is or there isn't anything beyond this material world, and I've never found an answer that feels in any way definitive. I can't leave the question alone either." It was made into an Emmy Award-winning HBO film directed by Mike Nichols. This two-part epic, subtitled "A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," has received hundreds of performances worldwide in more than twenty-six languages.
