First edition of Rainbird’s classic work on wine. Quarto, bound in full burgundy morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe/Zaehnsdorf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt-decorated dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition.

Born in Budapest in in 1816, Joseph Zaehnsdorf apprenticed to and obtained employment with several of Europe and London's most prestigious 19th century bookbinders. In 1842, he founded his own firm which became one of the most prestigious book binderies in the world and remained independent until 1983 when it merged with Sangorski and Sutcliffe.
