First edition of the first published general survey of American folk sculpture, wood carving, metal-casting, and stone carving. Quarto, bound in full morocco by Asprey with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, with 183 illustrations including four in color. In fine condition.

Art historian Jean Herzberg Lipman began collecting folk art in 1936 with the goal of furnishing a home in Connecticut. She soon became an associate editor of Art in America and came to specialize in the fields of American painted furniture and folk carving. American Folk Art in Wood, Metal and Stone was the first published survey on the topic including evaluations and examples of American ship figureheads, circus and carousel carvings, toys, and weathervanes furnished by the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Newark Museum, Index of American Design, and many private collectors.
