The story revolves around a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
