Perhaps the most remarkable portrait of the people of Israel ever to appear in print, John Phillips' A Will To Survive constitutes a near perfect cross-section of Israel. Phillips was in the Middle East in May of 1948 covering the birth of Israel for Life Magazine and when the assault was launched against the old Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem on the 18th, he was in the center of events. In 1976, an exhibition of these poignant and shattering photographs was mounted in the Israeli Museum in Jerusalem, resulting in record-breaking attendance.
