Robbins' third novel follows the story of Danny Fischer, a nineteen year old growing up in a lower-middle class Jewish family in the Depression-era Brooklyn suburbs. The novel was adapted by screenwriters Herbert Baker and Michael V. Gazzo into the 1958 movie King Creole, starring Elvis Presley, released by Paramount Pictures on July 2, 1958, to both critical and commercial success. It is widely considered one of Presley's greatest performances.
