A President’s Country: A Guide to the Hill Country of Texas.

MAGUIRE, Jack. [Lyndon B. Johnson].

Item Number: 111579

Austin: The Alcade Press, 1964.

First edition of Texan writer Jack Maguire’s work on “Hill Country” Texas, where Lyndon B. Johnson was born, raised, attended college, and ran for his first public office. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with drawings by Mac Tatchell. Association copy, inscribed by Lyndon B. Johnson on the title page in the year of publication,”To Nick Katzenbach, from his friend, Lyndon B. Johnson, 11/28/64.” The recipient was Nicolas Katzenbach, served as Attorney General under the Lyndon Johnson Administration. Katzenbach has been credited with providing advice after the assassination of John F. Kennedy that led to the creation of the Warren Commission. On November 25, 1963, he sent a memo to Johnson’s White House aide Bill Moyers recommending the creation of a Presidential Commission to investigate the assassination. To combat speculation of a conspiracy, Katzenbach said the results of the FBI’s investigation should be made public. He wrote, in part: “The public must be satisfied that Oswald was the assassin; that he did not have confederates who are still at large.” Near fine in a near fine dust jacket.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, near Stonewall, Texas, in a small farmhouse on the Pedernales River in an area known to Texans as "Hill Country". Maguire states in the introduction to this work, "It was here that the 36th President of the United States was born, attended school, clerked in a grocery store, worked as a janitor to pay his way through college, and ran for his first public office. Here in the Crystal Ballroom of Austin's old Driskill Hotel, he received word of his election as Vice President of the United States."
