John Campbell compiled this extensive survey of Britain with the intention "...to show that we have not as yet approached near the summit of improvement, but that it will afford employment to many generations before they push to their utmost extent the natural advantages of Great Britain." The text provides a detailed history of England and Great Britain as well as extensive observations of its natural history, topography, trades, politics, population and future potential given the broad scope of research conducted.
