"Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed": First edition of A Masque of Poets; containing the only poem published in a book by Emily Dickinson during her lifetime

A Masque of Poets.

DICKINSON, Emily.

Item Number: 101300

Roberts Brothers:, 1878.

Scarce first edition of the poetry collection containing the only poem published in a book by Emily Dickinson during her lifetime. Octavo, original cloth, rebacked, gilt titles to the spine and front panel, top edge gilt illustrated. With Emily Dickinson’s poem Success on page 174. In near fine condition. Scarce and desirable.

Although a handful of her poems appeared in newspapers without her consent, Emily Dickinson's poem Success was the only poem published in a book during her lifetime, although it is not attributed to her in the book. It was not until Dickinson's death in 1886, that her younger sister Lavania discovered her cache of poem, and that the breadth of her work became public. Her first collection of poetry was published four years after her death in 1890 by personal acquaintances Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd.
