German philosopher Immanuel Kant exerted an enduring influence on western philosophy with his Critique of Pure Reason, published in 1781. Also referred to as Kant's First Critique, the author explains in the preface to the first edition that he meant the text not to be "a critique of books and systems, but of the faculty of reason in general, in respect of all knowledge after which it may strive independently of all experience."
