A Frozen Woman, first published in France as La femme gelée in 1981, is one of Annie Ernaux’s early autobiographical works, a clear-eyed and unsparing account of a lively, ambitious girl who gradually finds herself narrowed into the conventional roles of wife, mother, and homemaker. Drawing on her own upbringing and marriage, Ernaux traces how the promise of an independent life is worn away by the everyday expectations placed on women, in the spare, sociologically acute style that became her signature. Ernaux is among the most influential French writers of her generation, celebrated for a body of intimate autobiographical narratives including Cleaned Out, A Man’s Place, and The Years, and in 2022 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements, and collective restraints of personal memory.
