Rare 19th or 20th century flag of the American Confederacy’s first official national flag, known as the “Stars and Bars,” likely  made for reunions or parades. The flag features seven stitched stars in a circle within a blue canton and three bars, two red and one white. In near fine condition. Mounted and framed. The flag measures 21.5 inches by 14.5 inches. The entire piece measures 24 inches by 16.5 inches.

The founding of the Confederate States of America in 1861 created a need for national symbols that would distinguish the new government from the United States and unite the seceded southern states. After Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, several southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy in Montgomery, Alabama. One of the new government’s first actions was adopting an official national flag known as the “Stars and Bars.” Designed by Nicola Marschall, a German-American artist living in Alabama, the flag featured three horizontal stripes and a blue canton with white stars representing the seceded states. Although the design symbolized Confederate independence, it closely resembled the United States flag, which often caused confusion during Civil War battles.
