Steinbeck’s inscription refers, in jest, to Wilson’s harsh critique of his work in his 1941 publication The Boys in the Back Room: Notes on California Novelists. Rare United States Air Force photograph of legendary aviator Howard Hughes, Major General Oscar Westover, and General of the Air Force Henry H. Arnold. Signed and inscribed by each aviation pioneer, “O. Westover Maj. Gen. A.C. Chief of the Air Corps”, “Howard Hughes”, and “H. Arnold Brig Gen. A.C.” Major General Oscar Westover succeeded Benjamin Foulois as Chief of the Air Corps in 1935 and, on September 21, 1938, perished in an air crash at Burbank, California. Henry H. Arnold succeeded Westover as Chief of Air Corps on September 29, 1938. Arnold rose to command the Army Air Forces immediately prior to the American entry into World War II and directed its hundred-fold expansion from an organization of little more than 20,000 men and 800 first-line combat aircraft into the largest and most powerful air force in the world. He additionally moonlighted as a silent film stunt pilot and was portrayed on film by actor Walter O. Miles in the 1977 American made-for-television biographical film The Amazing Howard Hughes, starring Tommy Lee Jones as Hughes. In 1946, Hughes performed the first flight of the prototype U.S. Army Air Forces reconnaissance aircraft, the XF-11, near Hughes airfield at Culver City, California. The XF-11 crashed in Beverly Hills, destroying three houses. Hughes was rescued by Marine Master Sgt. William L. Durkin, who happened to be in the area visiting friends. It is rumored that Hughes sent a check to the Marine weekly for the remainder of his life as a sign of gratitude. In fine condition. Exceptionally rare, signed three major figures in the history of American aviation.

Winston Churchill at the wartime meeting of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers, signed by him and 43 other world leaders. The 1944 Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference, hosted by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill between 1 and 16 May, brought together the heads of government from all the Dominions except Ireland and Newfoundland and was the first in a series of 17 such conferences which took place between 1944 and 1969 and arguably the most significant, having been convened in order to coordinate the Allied war effort. At the 1944 Conference, the assembled leaders agreed to support the Moscow Declaration and the Commonwealth contribution to the upcoming Operation Overlord was discussed. Among the international leaders whose signatures appear here are, the British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts, Lord Privy Seal Lord Beaverbrook, Indian Prime Minister Hari Singh and Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee. Photograph by Bassano, signed by him at the lower edge. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 30 inches by 20 inches. A unique piece of world history.

Quarto, bound in full leatherette with titles lettered in gilt, illustrated with charts and photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman to Raja Shamraj Rajwant Bahadur, “To Raja Shamraj Rajwant Bahadur with the highest regards of C.V. Raman 3.5.1946.” The recipient, Indian nobleman Raja Shamraj Rajwant Bahadur assembled India’s greatest library, famed for its diverse collection of rare antiquarian manuscripts and important books. With the Raja’s ownership signature and inscription which notes that the book was received from Sir C.V. Raman by registered book post on 6.5.1946, but Sir Raman paid a personal visit in 4-4-46 from 3:30pm- 5:30pm. In very good condition. Laid in is a collection of clippings related to The Raman Research Institute and a Brief Biographical Sketch produced by The Bangalore Press. Scarce with only one other book signed by Raman recorded.

First editions of this work, from the library of Stephen Hawking with a presentation inscription, “To Stephen Hawking To mark the International Relativity Conference, Cambridge, June 1976, the papers of the Cambridge genius of an earlier generation. G. L. W.” Stephen Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. Hawking’s scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. He was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Hawking may be one of the most recognizable of theoretical physicists in part due to ALS, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device—initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He is also well known since he achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book, A Brief History of Time, appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks and mentions the works of Rutherford a number of times. He most likely used this book as a resource. A nice association linking these two great physicists, who are both buried near one another at Westminster Abbey in London. Octavo, original cloth.
