First edition of Beecher Bronson’s classic account of his hunting experiences in Africa. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with nearly 100 photographs by the author. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “The author inscribed this volume for a well-loved kindred spirit…. Edwin Willard Deming, EB Bronson NY 12 Nov ’12.” The recipient was American artist Edwin Willard Deming, who studied under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. In 1887 Deming first visited and painted the Apaches and Pueblos of the Southwest. His career of painting and illustrating took him repeatedly to the lands of the Blackfoot, Crow, and Sioux, as well as to Arizona and New Mexico. After the turn of the century, Deming devoted more time to sculpture but also began work on a series of romantic murals of Indian life, which were subsequently installed in the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the American Indian in New York. Signed personal bookplate of the recipient, Edwin Willard Deming, in near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. Rare and desirable.

From the library of of James Stephen “Steve” Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. Greenway, was a Dutch-American Universalist minister and eminent autograph collector. He served as the minister of the All Souls Church in Brooklyn, New York for almost 40 years and led the opposition against the unification of the Unitarian and Universalist denominations. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “To Ted Fletcher with pleasant memories of Kabul from Robert Byron.” The recipient, was Major Fletcher, a member of the British Legion in Kabul in the late 1930s and early 1940s, acting as a war military attache and intelligence officer. Fletcher is mentioned in this volume by Byron that the Major had driven him out to see Dar-al-Aman and Paghman on an excursion from Kabul. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Rare in the original dust jacket and with such an association.

Medd, who was an architect and best-known for his collaboration with fellow architects, Edwin Luytens and Herbert Baker, in designing New Delhi. He remained in India and in 1939-47 held the role of Chief Architect to the Indian Government. Medd’s ownership inscription is on the front free endpaper, there is also the bookplate of Gavin Stamp on the front pastedown, who notes that it was a gift from Medd. Stamp reviewed the Picador edition of this work for the Spectator in 1981 and a photocopy of his review is included. In very good condition. A nice example with noted provenance.
