Signed limited first edition of President Johnson’s autobiography, one of 300 copies, this is number 61. Octavo, original red cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with 72 pages of photographs. Signed by Lyndon Baines Johnson. Additionally inscribed by Johnson in the year of publication on the dedication page, “To Abe Feinberg who was always there all the way for his Country & his President from his friend Lyndon B. Johnson LBJ Ranch ‘Xmas ’71.” The recipient Abraham Feinberg was a successful businessman with investments and businesses in New York and Israel. A supporter of Jewish causes, Feinberg is regarded as having been instrumental in the establishment of the state of Israel. As the president of Haganah, the Zionist military movement, he helped mobilize support for Israel. He offered his home to Zionist leaders who were trying to gain support of the U.S. government and assisted European Jews seeking refuge. He even accompanied Israel’s first president, Chaim Weizmann, to his first meeting with President Harry Truman. Active in American politics, Feinberg worked informally with the U.S. and Israeli governments during Middle East crises, led many Democratic fundraisers and served as a confidant to Presidents Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. There was hardly a Jewish cause to which he did not contribute. In near fine condition. An exceptional association.

Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of Ulysses S. Grant as President. Addressed to the Attorney General of the United States Edwards Pierrepont the letter reads, “Elizabeth, N.J. Sept. 2nd 1876 Dear Judge, While in Utica Judge Hunt spoke to me of the importance of appointing a member to Judge Woodruff at as early as a day as practicable on account of the great amount of business before the court. I do not know of any lawyer in the circuit to whom to tender the position when it should be Senator Edmunds and he I should dislike to see leave the Senate. But you are well acquainted with the Bar in that circuit and its wants, and can no doubt suggest the right man for the place. If you will send me a commission therefore to St. Louis so as to reach me there between the 24th and 28th either filled up of the name blank, with suggestions as to the best man I will sign and return it. Very truly your humble servant U.S. Grant.” Grant appointed Pierrepont Attorney General of the United States on April 26, 1875. When he assumed the office, Pierrepont immediately implemented overdue reform in the South’s U.S. Marshal and U.S. Attorney departments including extensive investigations into the conduct of the U.S. Attorneys and U.S. Marshals, exposing fraud and corruption. The patent is issued to “Elisha Holton, a citizen of the United States, who hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement in the construction of a grist mill.” The second page contains a lengthy hand-written description of the construction and design of the grist mill signed by Holton on the verso. Also bound in is an original hand-colored technical drawing of the grist mill. In fine condition. The entire document measures 15 inches by 11.5 inches. Uncommon. First edition, the author’s edition. Octavo, original half leatherette, slipcase, illustrated with 32 pages of black-and-white photographs. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Honorable John Wesley Snyder from his good friend, comrade and associate in most trying times. He was the greatest of the great Secretaries of the Treasury.” The original slipcase is also inscribed to Snyder from Truman but has faded. John W. Snyder was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1946 by his close personal friend President Truman, with whom he had served in the Army Reserves. His task as Secretary was to establish a stable postwar economy. The main points of his program were maintaining confidence in the credit of the government, reducing the federal debt, keeping the interest rate low, and encouraging public thrift through investment in U.S. Savings Bonds. A conservative businessman, he had faith that the free economy would work itself out. He reduced the national debt while balancing the budget. He held several public and private positions including National Bank Receiver in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Loan Administrator, and Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion. In the last office he played a leading part in the transition of the Nation’s economy from wartime to a peacetime basis. An excellent association.

Quartos, two volumes bound in three quarters morocco over pebbled leatherette boards, gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of grant, illustrated with engravings both full page and within the text. In near fine condition. One page, partially printed, the document reads, “I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Harris Fisher and Henry Goldstein, dated this day and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant. “U.S. Grant” Washington 23 Nov. 1874.” In fine condition. The document measures 10 inches by 7.75 inches.

Carl Van Vechten was an American writer and photographer who was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance and the literary executor of Gertrude Stein. One page, dated December 6, 1830, the document grants a parcel of land in Merion County, Ohio to Daniel Musser and reads in part, “To all whom these presents shall come greeting whereas Daniel Musser of Marion County, Ohio has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States a certificate of the Register of the Land Office…whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Daniel Musser according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled ‘An act making further provision for the side of the Public Lands'”. Signed by Andrew Jackson and countersigned by Elijah Haywood, Commissioner of the General Land Office. In very good condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22.5 inches by 16.5 inches.
