Bound in three quarters contemporary black calf over olive green boards, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised tooled bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, engraved frontispiece portrait of Martin Luther with tissue guard present. In very good condition with Millard Fillmore’s ownership inscription and library catalog notes on the title page of each volume, “Millard Fillmore March 26, 1857 Rebound April 16, 1860” who has also crossed out the “J-5” bookshelf designation, replacing it with “G-1” in pencil. An exceptional piece of American history from the President who created the White House Library.

Blodgett’s purchasing so many Histories of Woman Suffrage to give to his friends. Therefore please accept these for his sake, & oblige. Yours very sincerely, Susan B. Anthony, Rochester N.Y., Nov. 5, 1904.” Delos Abiel Blodgett of Grand Rapids, MI founded an orphanage which remains active today. Grace Richmond Bartholomew (1848-1920) was a farmer of Pioneer, Michigan.

Mounted on a decorative brass stand. From the collection of former four-term United States Senator Lloyd Millard Bentsen who ran as the Democratic Party nominee for vice president in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket and served as the the 69th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. As a primary architect of the Clinton economic plan, Bentsen contributed to a $500 billion reduction in the deficit, launching the longest period of economic growth since World War II. More than 5 million new jobs were created during his tenure as Secretary. Bentsen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. In fine condition. A unique piece of Americana and with noted provenance.

Rare Imperial Decree boldly signed by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Two pages, partially printed in Italian, the decree outlines a proposal for the construction of a bridge over the Sesia River in Vercelli, to be financed by the Kingdom of Italy as part of Napoleon’s civic improvement plan initiated during his administration of Ital. Dated April 12, 1809, the decree reads in part, “Napoleon, by the grace of God & by the Constitution, French Emperor, King of Italy, Protector of the Rhine Confederation, have decreed and decree what follows: Art. 1. Our Kingdom of Italy will contribute the certain sum of 150,000 lire to the expense of building the Vercelli bridge on the Sesia. Art. 2. The payment will be made in installments at the rate of 50,000 lire per year starting from the current year. Art. 3. This expense will be carried into the budget of the Minister of the Interior, and to the head of the extraordinary works of water and roads. Art. 4. The Minister of the Interior is in charge of the execution of this decree. Given at our Imperial Palace of the Tuileries this day April 12, 1809″. Signed by Napoleon Bonaparte at the conclusion the decree, “Napole”. Double matted and framed with a portrait of Napoleon. The entire piece measures 31.5 inches by 21.25 inches.

Additionally signed by fellow Nobel laureates Desmond Tutu and F.W. de Klerk. Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid. In 1993, Mandela and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in ending apartheid. After the first universal elections in 1994, de Klerk became deputy president in the government of national unity under Nelson Mandela, a post he kept until 1996. In 1997 he resigned the leadership of the National Party and retired from politics. Fine in a near fine dust jacket.

In 1972, an edict was issued that Lin’s name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to assassinate Mao; consequently, “many surviving copies in the Chinese language have that page legitimately torn away, mutilated or censored” (Schiller, p. 36).
