The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches, printed in black gothic type, capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history.

Both have been cradles of American freedom.” Quarter, bound in a loose leaf folder, gilt-lettered cover.

Life Magazine’s souvenir edition commemorating Kennedy’s inauguration. Presentation copy, inscribed by President Kennedy, “For Mr. Joseph Clark with very best wishes, John Kennedy. The recipient, Joseph Clark was a United States Senator from Pennsylvania from 1957 to 1969. He worked with Kennedy in the Senate, and continued to their push for civil rights, highlighting the issue as a major part of Kennedy’s presidential campaign. He endorsed new legislation to extend voting rights, end discrimination in education and housing, and establish the Fair Employment Practices Commission. Kennedy announced during his campaign that Clark and Congressman Emanuel Celler had agreed to prepare a comprehensive civil rights bill ‘embodying the commitments of the Democratic platform,’ to be introduced early in the next congressional session. One of the key issues in Kennedy’s campaign, which helped him win the presidency in 1960. Matted and framed with the printed text of Kennedy’s inaugural speech, a portrait of Kennedy giving his speech. The entire piece measures 27 inches by 34 inches. Rare and desirable, especially with such an association.

One page, partially printed with engraved vignettes and retaining the original orange paper seal, the commission appoints Leonard Paulding as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. Beginning as a midshipman abroad the USS Preble II, he was promoted to an officer on September 14, 1855 and subsequently to Lieutenant Commander with the present document. In fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 26 inches by 23 inches. Rare and desirable.

One page printed on vellum dated July 7th, 1801 and signed at the conclusion “Th: Jefferson” and “James Madison.” The letter reads that it was issued “in pursuance of the act of Congress passed on the first day of June 1796, entitled ‘An Act regulating the grants of Land appropriated for Military Services, and for the Society of the United Brethren for propagating the gospel among the Heathen.'” Military land grants were issued during the Revolutionary War as compensation for military service. With the original paper seal affixed to the lower left corner of the document. In very good condition with light toning. Double matted and framed with portraits of both Jefferson and Madison. The letter measures 11.5 inches by 12 inches. The entire piece measures 33.5 inches by 19 inches. A rare and desirable piece of Americana.

Mandela 22.3.90 Windhoek.” Additionally signed by future South African president Thabo Mbeki and dated 21.3.90; Namibia’s first prime minister, Hage Geingob; Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president; Joe Slovo, leading member of the African National Congress; Alfred Nzo, longest-standing secretary-general of the African National Congress and South Africa’s Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Mandela Administration. In near fine condition with some light wear to the cover. Signatures of Nelson Mandela preceding his presidency are rare.

Rare original Cartier-printed program from the dinner held in honor of Winston S. Churchill at the Waldorf Astoria on Friday, March 15th 1946. Quarto, gilt embossed coat of arms of the United Kingdom to the front panel, the first page features a full-page photogravure of Canadian photographer Yousef Karsh’s iconic portrait of Churchill, “The Roaring Lion” which in May 1945 was featured on the cover of Life magazine. Signed by Churchill beneath his famous likeness, “Winston S. Churchill.” In 1941, after Churchill’s address to the Canadian Parliament, Karsh had but a moment to photograph him and daringly removed the cigar from Churchill’s mouth, memorializing the staunch leader’s stern expression with the image he captured at that very moment. Churchill later said to Karsh, “You can even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed,” which led Karsh to name the portrait “The Roaring Lion.” Containing two excerpts from two of Churchill’s most memorable speeches: his first speech as Prime Minister and his June 4th 1940 speech following the evacuation of Dunkirk. In fine condition. Rare and desirable, signed only ten days after Churchill delivered his famous ‘Iron Curtain Speech’ in Fulton, Missouri declaring: “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere.” In fine condition.

Churchill’s collected works, inscribed by both his wife and youngest daughter in the year of the centenary of his birth to the winner of the 1974 C & G Gimcrack Horse Race at that very race. Octavos, 34 volumes bound in the original full vellum with gilt titles and gilt-stamped Churchill coat of arms to the spines and front panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Each volume housed in the original dark green slipcase which is also gilt-stamped with the Churchill coat of arms. One of only 3,000 sets produced, this is number 143. Volume I, which contains My Early Life and My African Journey is inscribed by The Baroness Clementine Churchill opposite her preface, “Inscribed by Clementine Spencer Churchill” as well as her youngest daughter Mary, “presented by her youngest daughter Mary Soames, “and presented by her daughter to Mr. Ravi Tikkoo at York Races August the 22nd 1974.” The inscribed volume is housed in a custom oak and vellum clamshell box with ornate claw feet, velvet lining, and gold plaque which reads, C and G Gimcrack Stakes 1974 Presented to Mr. Ravi Tikkoo Owner of Steel Heart (Habitat – A. I. by Abernant) Winner of the C & G Gimcrack Stakes 1974, by Lady Soames in the Centenary Year of the Birth of Her Father Sir Winston Churchill.” In excellent condition. A brilliant set with exceptional provenance.
