Fairbanks as Vice President of the United States of America on the Fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and five, and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred twenty-ninth. It is therefore requested that all Civic and Military organizations participating in these ceremonies give due respect to such directions as may be issued by him in that behalf. Attest. “John A. In April 1985, Whitehead was asked to become Deputy Secretary of State, to Secretary George Shultz, and served until January 1989. During this period, he was Acting Secretary of State when Shultz was away from Washington and took a special interest in relations with Eastern Europe, the United Nations, and with various administrative reforms in the U.S. Department of State.
