Photographic portrait of General Robert E. Lee flanked by his son, General George Washington Custis Lee, on his right and Colonel Walter Taylor on his left. Inscribed by one of the earliest photographers in American history, Mathew Brady, on a mount, “To Col. Robert Alexander Compliments of his friend, M.B. Brady.” The photograph was taken at Lee’s estate in Richmond, Virginia in April of 1865, only days after his surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. This is one in a series taken by Brady in the basement below the back porch of the estate and from the original wet plates in the Brady-Handy collection. “This photograph is one of the most celebrated images produced by Brady, who established his reputation in the 1850s as the preeminent portraitist in New York and Washington, D.C. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Brady sought out General Robert E. Lee, who had returned to the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia, after his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. At the photographer’s request General Lee reluctantly put on his uniform and posed at the back of his residence with his son, General George Washington Custis Lee (left), and his chief of staff, Colonel Walter H. Taylor (right). The image conveys the pathos of defeat for the Confederacy and for Lee personally. For Brady, who had been present at the first battle of the Civil War at Bull Run, this portrait completed his photographic coverage of the conflict” (WAM). Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 17 inches by 14 inches. An exceptional piece of Americana.

U.S. Grant Lt. Gen.” Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to Lieutenant General of the United States Army on March , 1864, a rank which had only previously been held by George Washington. Following Lincolns assassination in April of 1865, Grant became America’s first four-star general and played an important role in aiding Congress in their effort to reconstruct the South. In near fine condition. With a first edition of the complete report which is in very good condition. Rare and desirable.

In consideration of the aesthetic needs of the Treasury for both widespread reproduction of these images on banknotes and well as the fine detail required to distinguish counterfeiting, the engravings are considered among the finest American examples of 19th century. Octavo, five volumes, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine, stamped ruling to the panels, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece to each volume, illustrated with 8 additional tissue-guarded plates of portraits and views; one a folding facsimile of a draft memorandum by Prince Albert to Lord Lyons in 1861. Association copies, each volume is inscribed by Queen Victoria on the front free endpaper to Sir Francis Seymour. Volume I is inscribed, “To Sir Francis Seymour Bart. In recollection of his dear Mother from Victoria Windsor Castle Dec. 14, 1874.” Volume II is inscribed, “To Lieutenant General Sir Francis Seymour Bart. from Victoria Nov. 22, 1876.” Volume III is inscribed, “To General Sir Francis Seymour Bart. from Victoria R December 1877.” Volumes IV and V are similarly inscribed. The recipient, Sir Francis Seymour, 1st Baronet, was a British Army officer and courtier. His son, Albert Victor Francis Seymour, who was born when Seymour was 74 years old served as a Page of Honour to Queen Victoria. In very good condition. Mixed editions as often: vols. I, IV, and V are first editions, vol. II is a second edition, and vol. III is a fifth edition. Rare and desirable with all five volumes inscribed.

Later, he was Registrar General and President of the Royal Statistical Society from 1916 to 1918. He married Marie Adeane, who at various times was a Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria and had two sons, one of whom was Sir Victor Mallet, the diplomat. In very good condition.

Rare original sepia-toned photograph of Theodore Roosevelt and Commander Leonard Wood leading a regimental drill with the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry in San Antonio, Texas. The photograph was featured as a double page engraved illustration in Roosevelt’s best-selling work, The Rough Riders. San Antonio was a pivotal location in the cavalry’s history as it was from the Menger Hotel that Roosevelt conceived of and formed the group. In 1905, a Rough Riders reunion convened in San Antonio at the end of the campaign season and before the commencement of Roosevelt’s second term as president. Matted and framed with fragments from historic army San Antonio photographer, D.P. Barr’s original presentation mat in a sleeve to the verso. The entire piece measures 19.5 inches by by 11.5 inches.
